The issue of Anti-Zionism and its connection to the latest resurgence in Antisemitism, particularly among the political Left, is a complicated one. Unlike Antisemitism, which was conceived from the beginning to distinguish Jews as an inferior race rather than just followers of a heretical faith, Anti-Zionism, in its legitimate form, is critical of Israel's policies (especially towards the Palestinians) and it's validity as a state, usually on humanitarian and/or religious grounds. There are significant numbers of Jews and Israelis who vocally identify themselves as Anti-Zionist. This is totally understandable.
What is not understandable is how the mainstream public is burying it's collective head in the sand when it is plain as day that Anti-Zionism is being hijacked by Jew-haters who seek to restir an ancient animosity for a new generation. If awareness to this fucked up phenomenon is not brought to the foreground, the current political landscape is going to descend further down the slippery slope towards a repeat of history and genocide. Hence, I shall make a list of traits that can be reliably observed on repeated instances and should help distinguish Anti-"Zionists" (note the use of quotes), from the genuine article on an individual basis. This list shall be refined and expanded in the future as I explore this phenomenon deeper. Outside input is appreciated.
A bad attitude
This should be the first thing you should notice whenever you encounter an Anti-"Zionist". He or she tends to have a demeanor that is exceptionally combative, defensive, condescending, or otherwise totally unsuitable for an honest debate on any subject (or a normal social life for that matter) let alone the Mid-East conflict. This typically manifests itself in an initial statement loaded with hate and vitriol against "Zionists" that is heavily one-sided and misrepresentative. Anyone who expresses disagreement or calls for moderation is immediately insulted in one way or another (as opposed to being countered with an articulate and/or lucid rebuttal).
Weasely arguments
The arguments of the Anti-"Zionist" display a significant dearth of critical thinking. He or she regularly resorts to emotional appeals, alarmist rhetoric, shame tactics, and logical fallacies. Moral relativism/equivalency of the most extreme and ludicrous kind is often invoked (ie. "Fighting back against terrorism makes you no better then they are. You should
all turn the other cheek. No! I don't care that I also bash Christians!") as well as glorification of the alleged Muslim "victims". An astute observer might get a sense that these yahoos are fully conscious of advocating a highly negative position and are overcompensating to obfuscate this obvious negativity. Other Anti-"Zionists" are really just bored losers who get their kicks by agitating and/or offending others.
False compassion
If the audience of an Anti-"Zionist" possesses a shred of sanity (not much of a guarantee in these troubled times), they might wonder how a person of such toxic temperament would have any capacity for selfless compassion. The answer is that the Anti-"Zionist's" compassion for the innocent Muslim victims of the Mid-East conflict is equal to that of the Islamofascists who liberally use them as expendable pawns and human shields; he or she could give a rat's ass about them (or anyone else for that matter) as the lion's share of any emotion is devoted to ripping up "Zionists" and their "manipulated" allies. Energy that would be better invested to actually aid survivors and refugees is wasted. Another aspect of this is the downplaying of atrocities committed in the name of the Palestinians' plight (all attacks by Al Qaeda count) or even justifying them regardless of the circumstances and context. Have I mentioned that the Anti-"Zionists" are fucking insane?
Old cliches with a new twist
This is another part when the Anti-"Zionist's", "Mask of Sanity" slips and the true colors are shown. He or she resorts to invoking classic antisemitic memes while taking great care (unless he or she has totally taken leave of all senses at this point) to substitute "Zionist" for "Israeli" or "Jew". The most common of these is the globe-spanning conspiracy theory (which is quite popular and enduring despite the Islamofascists being vocal to having similar ambitions that involve much more brutal methods). Another meme is the blood libel which dates back to the Middle-Ages only with Palestinian babies alledgely being ritually exsanguinated. This by itself is undisputable evidence that Anti-Zionism is well into the process of perversion at the hands of old-school Jew-haters just like other idealogies in the past.
"I can't be antisemitic! I've got Jews in my family!"
I really hate this one. The anti-"zionist" attempts to brush off observations of his or her blatant bigotry by claiming to have positive relations with Jews and/or Israelis among his or her family and/or friends. Others may claim to have resided in Israel at some point or even be living there now if the anti-"zionist" is online and his or her physical location cannot be confirmed. This tactic has been observed within the context of other forms of bigotry (ie. "I've got an uncle who has darker skin than you!" or "I'm married to a black woman."). Pathetic.
A lean, mean, copy n' pasting machine
If one encounters an Anti-"Zionist" online, be sure to expect many pasted articles from sources of dubious objectivity (that includes the BBC). Often, they will pick crap from blogs, conspiracy theory archives, and other hosts of fringe material that may be passed off as "alternative news sources". This tactic is meant to compensate for the Anti-"Zionist's" poor ability at articulating a critical assessment of his or her own. Any addendums to pasted crap will almost invariably be echos of itself.
Childish mimicry
The Anti-"Zionist" will often display his or her dearth of imaginative thinking and wit by mimicking his or her critics. This practice does not take the form of clever wordplay but rather verbatim mimicry such as that observed among grade school bullies. This is most likely a byproduct of the next item on the list.
Signs of psychological instability
Quite often, the Anti-"Zionist" displays other traits and stereotypical behavior that closely match the DSM-IV criteria for the worst personality disorders (namely Antisocial and Borderline) and/or other pathologies that are just as alarming if not more so (like Schizophrenia and Bipolar). A few telltale signs are: An absence of any sense of humor except for crude and defensive sarcasm. Extreme sensitivity to perceived slights (yet it is somehow okay for him or her to throw insults left and right). A childish disposition that is incongruous with physical age. You get the picture.
These rules of thumb that, after some superficial revisions, can actually be applied to extremists from both the Left and the Right. This is actually part of the problem: the Anti-"Zionist" yahoos are actually just one part of a multi-headed hydra that encompasses both sides of the political spectrum and is fully intent on destroying all that is good in the civilized world. Regardless of the issue at hand, be it women's rights, gay rights, abortion, the War on Terror, the War on Drugs, racism, etc. you can be sure that the "agents" (I'd like to think they're just loosely organized coteries of like-minded asshats. God forbid they are anything more than that.) of this hydra will advocate the most extreme and destructive position without any regard for practicality. Who are these pukes? A few google searches and an examination of politicians' voting records should yield answers. Why are they doing this? Good question. My theory: They are too psycho to function in a progressive, civilized society that rewards merit so the only alternative they see is to destroy or at least pervert all that is progressive and civilized.

God bless America and Israel, it will be our reslove that saves this world from Islamic Facist.
NEway, the "Anti-Semite does not equal Anti-Jew" argument comes across to me as a smooching cousin to "Anti-Zionist does not equal Anti-Semite". It's really all semantics and PC meant to help bigots cover up their fucked-upness and they're doing a piss poor job at that.

No problems here.

You have a point here. But this thinking can also point this towards the propaganda campaign against Muslims. Some of the criticisms of Islam are justified, many are not. I believe I have talked you before about the widespread misconception that al Quaeda is responsible for every terrorist attack in the world. Also the fear that has been created against anyone looking slightly Middle-eastern.

Sounds like you are describing yourself here. Your extremely biased forum posts, your recent banning and also your “Fuck Lebanon” featured deviation all point to this.

How is “Fuck Lebanon” moderation? Your hypocrisy is downright astounding.

It is true many people to resort to these tactics. But they are the people too ignorant and immature to be worth debating with in the first place.

“all attacks by Al Qaeda count” That’s complete bullshit.

Likewise many people posting in support of Zionism use pro-Zionist publications which lack objectivity and often have no credibility. The fact is that all news publications have some form of bias, it is a matter of reading between the lines and making up your own mind using the facts available.

Token trolling on their part. Don't reply.

Because of the war going on, people have gotten very angry at the US government and it's foreign policy (this is understandable). However, some people are so angry with the United States that they begin to see all of our enemies as "victims" of some vague plot to dominate the world. These people see the citizens of Iraq as victims, but also the insurgents and the terrorists. Suddenly, terrorism is ok. Terrorists are being seen as "freedom fighters", and the victims of 9/11 are being compared to Nazis. Whatever these "freedom fighters" do, they will be supported by this psychotic minority of American people. And so when a group of insane tribal people decide to murder a few Israeli soldiers, they are somehow seen as "noble" and "defending the people of Lebanon".
If Hezbollah gave a god damn about the people of Lebanon, they never would have started a conflict with Israel. Israel is a modern, industrialized, democratic nation and I am glad that it is refusing to surrender to these barbarians.
Nice....Respectful mostly....Reasoning is flawed however. Of course, I did not write this under the delusion that it was immune to criticism. I've read plenty of opinion pieces in respected mainstream publications that made me want to pull my hair out because they were so fallacious or poorly reasoned.
A few words first of where I am coming from. I grew up in New Zealand and began learning about the Israel-Palestine conflict in history class. Personally I don’t know anyone who is Jewish, Palestinian or Lebanese. I have no emotional or personal ties to any of the parties involved apart from the belief that they are all equal human beings, and they all have the right to exist. Because of this I try to be as objective as possible. I believe the state of Israel has a right to exist, although in what capacity and where the borders should lie I have no idea. I commented on the parts I deemed worth commenting on.
And here are words where I am coming from: Considering that I am an Ashkenazi Jew, Israeli American (feel free to chide me for putting Israeli before American as others have done before), and have relatives who survived the Holocaust, I am afraid that I cannot stand on such a neutral position and be convincing about it. I'm sure you can understand.
As long as such Muslim-critical campaigns make references that can be confirmed by reliable outside sources (ie. they do not "expose" anything that can't be seen in the open), I have no problem with this. Anti-"Zionists" generally do not make a habit of being so considerate with their wide-eyed claims to globe-threatening conspiracy theories and political subversion.
Now about the issue of Al Qaeda: I acknowledge that it is not a good habit to jump to the most obvious conclusion but when a terrorist attack occurs that matches the modus operandi of Al Qaeda, it's foolish to be condescending and smug when people initially react by saying, "This smells like Al Qaeda!" Furthermore, Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the other usual suspects share the same ideological outlook and agenda and they network together. Sure. They don't entirely share certain ideas and that leads to squabbling amongs themselves (which can get violent) but they do often scratch each other's back to further the common agenda. Hence, the difference in names is superficial. Shit is still shit nomatter what label you stamp on it.
Sounds like you are describing yourself here. Your extremely biased forum posts, your recent banning and also your “Fuck Lebanon” featured deviation all point to this.
I wasn't initially like this when I delved into the politics forum. I made sincere efforts to back up my view with civility and reasoned arguments. You know what I discovered? People in general really REALLY do not like to be corrected. We often get deeply attached to our pet beliefs. We do not like doubt casted on them. We do not like to be boxed in analytically. We do not like to look stupid or WRONG! Hence, when I dissect the flimsy reasoning of a weak argument, the reaction I often get is not too out of line if I would have tossed all civility out the window and straight out flamed. It's silly. But its commonplace and easily observable in the politics forum.
Being in a "damned if you damned if you dont" situation, I adjusted my rules of engagement accordingly. Why should I bother being nice if the other guy is gonna be an asshole just because I casted doubt on his views?
As for my feelings towards Lebanon: I don't harbor an animosity towards the Lebanese to the degree that they harbor against my people. Hearing what happened in Qana did not make me feel like dancing and cheering in the street. At the same time, I acknowledge that the stink our countries are in are a direct result of Lebanese complacency that allowed a terrorist organization unambiguously hostile to Israel to have a strong and unchallenged presence in their country. They dont even seem to protest their homes used for weapons storage or their bodies used as human shields! I am sincere when I say FUCK THEM. They made their bed. They can lie in it.
“all attacks by Al Qaeda count” That’s complete bullshit.

I covered this already but let me be clear about something: I am describing the traits of an Anti-"Zionist" (note the use of quotes which express dubious legitimacy) within the context of a psychological pathology. How do you think those are diagnosed? You look for the presence of multiple symptoms that fit a diagnostic criteria. The presence of one symptom merely arouses suspicion. Two is a cause for alarm. Three or more leaves no room for doubt.
Likewise many people posting in support of Zionism use pro-Zionist publications which lack objectivity and often have no credibility. The fact is that all news publications have some form of bias, it is a matter of reading between the lines and making up your own mind using the facts available.
Okay. Presenting biased publications is expected but not alarming. Do they make claims to globe-threatening conspiracies and other X-files worthy shit with no solid evidence? That's quite alarming.
Thanks for your input.

Here's a more disturbing thought: What would these apologists say when these insane tribal people turn on them? Would they scream to the heavens cursing the Jews while the machetes descend on their necks?
Inability to identify the people who actually want to hurt you is the other side of the coin and is a whole different breed of insanity.

There are A LOT of idiots on the DA forums, trust me it's best to ignore them, or if you have to destroy there arguments with reasoned debate, it's most satisfying. Trolling and flame baiting acheives nothing except making your viewpoint worth less, and for many people to write you off as one of the idiots.
At the same time, I acknowledge that the stink our countries are in are a direct result of Lebanese complacency that allowed a terrorist organization unambiguously hostile to Israel to have a strong and unchallenged presence in their country.
I dispute this. Hizbollah formed in 1982 primarily to offer resistance to the Israeli occupation. Hizbollah forced Israel out of Southern Lebanon. The reason Hizbollah has been so popular in Lebanon is the same reason the Israeli governments extreme actions are supported by the majority of Israeli's today, they are beleived to be providing security for the people in a hostile environment. It has also provided social services programmes which are popular with the Shia community. I do not terrorism in any form, by anyone, for any means. But these are the facts.
“all attacks by Al Qaeda count” That’s complete bullshit.
Let me elaborate, my point was against the statement "Another aspect of this is the downplaying of atrocities committed in the name of the Palestinians' plight (all attacks by Al Qaeda count)" . While I do not dispute that Al Qaeda symapthises with the Palestinian people, I believe it is bullshit to say that every terrorist act carried out by Al Qaeda has been in the name of Palestine. That just isn't true.
