Is today's Leftism really Narcissistic Disorder?

Mon Oct 2, 2006, 11:19 PM
Let's see that DSM-IV criteria...

According to the DSM-IV, the disorder begins by early adulthood and is indicated by the subject exhibiting at least five of the following:
1. An exaggerated sense of self-importance (CHECK!)
2. Preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or
ideal love (How about preoccupation with fantasies of being morally and/or intellectually superior to the rest of the rabble as well as being "loved" by France.)
3. Believes he is "special" and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (CHECK!)
4. Requires excessive admiration (Translates into requires high poll numbers and approval ratings...and to be loved by the French.)
5. Has a sense of entitlement (CHECK!)
6. Selfishly takes advantage of others to achieve his own ends (Translates to selfishly takes advantage of his occupation (college professor, NYT reporter, etc.) to achieve his own ends.)
7. Lacks empathy (A human fetus is equivalent to a parasite you say? CHECK!)
8. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him (HELL YEAH CHECK)
9. Shows arrogant, haughty, patronizing, or contemptuous behaviors or attitudes (BIG TIME CHECK!)

I shall be writing an essay on the implications soon.

You made a major mistake in your topic, and I feel I need to point it out.

You forgot to include HER. It's not just HIM....HA! Just having fun with you.

I agree 95%, but I do feel that Leftisim is more a chronic dissorder.

:iconmalkavius:
I read on a psychiatrist's blog about a subtype of NPD called 'Idealistic Narcissisism.' Basically, the idealistic narcissistic is not focused on glorifying him/herself but rather an ideology or religion and then considers him/herself superior just for identifying with that ideology or religion while those who dissent are deemed evil, inferior, or otherwise unworthy of respect.

Another phenomenon worth knowing about is 'splitting.' It's a defense mechanism that is usually associated with Borderline Personality Disorder. Basically, it involves 'splitting' people into pure absolutes without acknowledging nuances. Get on a splitter's bad side and you instantly become the devil in his eyes; get in his favor and you become a saint.

So the next time a lefty accuses you of being a fascist/rascist/misogynist/whatever just because you disagree with some airy fairy nonsense of his, you should realize that he is not being stupid or deceitful. He's splitting.

"POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is a doctrine fostered by a dillusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous main stream media which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end. "
:iconhellshallbemine:
I hope you realize that the most important lesson taught to doctors about the DSM-IV (or any other medical classification books) is that while an individual with a disorder may display the listed symptoms, it does not necessarily/conclusively mean that an individual who displays such symptoms has that certain disorder. So checking off symptoms as you (subjectively) see them does not (in any way) mean anything. Your method may be a bit flawed.
:iconmalkavius:
You missed the question mark in the header. Regardless, until I start seeing more real ideas and less frothing rage and paranoia from that side, I'll keep dismissing them as miserable neurotics.
